Compression vs Encapsulation vs Combination
The construction type you choose determines the support level, target cup size, and price point of your sports bra.
Compression
Presses both breasts flat against the chest wall using stretch fabric tension. Simpler construction with fewer pattern pieces, lower cost, and faster production. Limitations: doesn't provide individual breast shaping, less effective for larger cup sizes.
Encapsulation
Individual cups surround and support each breast separately, similar to a traditional bra but built with performance fabrics. Provides natural shape definition and separation. More complex construction requiring inner cup panels and precise stitch engineering.
Combination
The gold standard for performance sports bras. Individual encapsulation cups for shape and separation, wrapped in an outer compression layer for bounce control. Highest manufacturing complexity and cost, but commands premium retail pricing of $50–85+.
