What Is 120 GSM Sportswear Fabric?

120 GSM sportswear fabric is the undisputed sweet spot of athletic textile weights — light enough for high-intensity performance in warm conditions, yet substantial enough to hold structure, opacity, and print fidelity. It accounts for an estimated 60%+ of all sublimated sportswear produced globally.

"120 GSM is where comfort meets capability. It's the weight that made sublimated soccer and basketball jerseys the global standard — light on the athlete, rich in color, and tough enough for a full season."

Our 120 GSM range is available in 100% polyester, 92/8 poly-spandex, and 85/15 poly-spandex — each in single jersey and interlock knit constructions. Every meter is tested for shrinkage (<3%), colorfastness (Grade 4+), pilling resistance (Grade 4+), and moisture wicking (AATCC 195).

Whether you're launching a custom teamwear brand, outfitting a league, or building an athleisure line, 120 GSM is the safest, most versatile starting point.

Why 120 GSM Is the Go-To Choice

The properties that make 120 GSM the most ordered fabric weight in sportswear.

Sublimation Perfect

Optimal fiber density for deep dye penetration — vibrant, fade-resistant full-color prints with zero cracking.

Ultra-Lightweight

Barely-there feel on the athlete — 120 GSM provides coverage without bulk, even during intense movement.

Moisture Wicking

Pulls sweat away from skin to the fabric surface where it evaporates rapidly — keeps athletes dry and cool.

Highly Breathable

Open knit structure allows maximum airflow — ideal for soccer, basketball, running, and training in warm conditions.

Quick Dry

Dries 2–3× faster than cotton — garments can be washed and game-ready within hours.

Shape Retention

Minimal shrinkage (<3%) after 50+ washes — garments hold their fit season after season.

Soft Hand Feel

Smooth, non-irritating surface that feels comfortable directly against skin — no itching or chafing.

UV Resistant

Polyester naturally resists UV degradation — maintains color and strength even with heavy outdoor exposure.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • The most proven weight for sublimated sportswear — trusted by thousands of brands
  • Perfect balance of lightweight comfort and enough body for structure
  • Excellent sublimation color vibrancy and edge sharpness
  • Highly breathable — ideal for high-intensity and warm-weather sports
  • Quick-dry and moisture-wicking out of the box — no extra finish needed
  • Cost-effective — widely produced, so pricing is very competitive
  • Low shrinkage (<3%) — maintains fit wash after wash
  • Naturally UV resistant — no additional treatment required
Disadvantages
  • Pure white 120 GSM can show slight translucency in direct light
  • Not thick enough for standalone outerwear or jackets
  • 100% poly version has minimal stretch — spandex blend needed for fitted garments
  • Lighter weight means slightly lower snag resistance than 150+ GSM
  • May feel too thin for consumers accustomed to heavy cotton tees
  • Not ideal for embroidery — fabric is too light for heavy stitch counts
Our mitigation: For white garments needing full opacity, we offer a 130 GSM variant or double-layer construction at minimal extra cost. For embroidery needs, we recommend our 150 GSM fabric which provides a stable base for dense stitch patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

120 GSM is arguably the most popular weight for sportswear globally. It strikes the perfect balance between lightweight comfort and enough body for structure and durability. It's the standard for soccer jerseys, basketball jerseys, training tops, and sublimated team uniforms worldwide.
Absolutely — 120 GSM polyester is the gold standard for sublimation printing. The weight provides enough fiber density for deep, vibrant color penetration while remaining lightweight enough for comfort. It's the most widely sublimated fabric weight in the entire sportswear industry.
120 GSM is lighter, more breathable, and drapes closer to the body — ideal for summer sports, jerseys, and training tops. 150 GSM has more structure, better opacity, and a slightly more premium feel — better for polo shirts, track jackets, and year-round training gear. Both sublimate equally well.
That depends on the composition. 100% polyester 120 GSM has minimal stretch (2–4% mechanical stretch from the knit structure). Adding 8% spandex (92/8 blend) gives 15–20% stretch. Going to 15% spandex (85/15) provides 25–30% stretch for compression-fit garments like base layers and fitted athleisure.
Pure white 120 GSM fabric may have slight translucency under direct bright light, but in colored or sublimated garments, opacity is excellent. For white garments where opacity is critical, we recommend our 130 GSM option or a double-layer construction — both available at minimal extra cost.
Single jersey is a single-knit construction — lighter, more stretchy, and has a distinct front (V-pattern) and back (purl loops). It's the standard for soccer and basketball jerseys. Interlock is a double-knit — smoother on both sides, slightly heavier feel, less stretch, and more stable. It's better for polo shirts and premium training tops where a smoother surface is desired.
Absolutely. We provide free A4-size fabric swatches (up to 3 options including different blends and knit structures) shipped via DHL/FedEx at no charge. We can also include a small sublimated sample so you can evaluate print quality on the actual fabric.
All our 120 GSM fabrics carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. Moisture wicking is tested to AATCC 195, colorfastness to Grade 4+ (AATCC 61), pilling resistance to Grade 4+ (Martindale), and shrinkage is guaranteed under 3%. Additional certifications (bluesign®, REACH) available on request.
