What Makes Fleece Fabric Different?

Fleece fabric is a engineered knit textile defined by one critical feature: a brushed, napped surface that traps pockets of air for insulation. Unlike woven insulation (like down or quilting), fleece provides warmth through fiber-level air entrapment — making it lightweight, breathable, and machine-washable.

Anti-Pilling Resistance

Polar fleece is a 100% polyester knit with a brushed, napped surface on one or both sides that traps air for insulation. It's lightweight, fast-drying, and very warm for its weight. French terry is a cotton or cotton-poly blend with unbrushed loops on the inside and a smooth face outside — more structured, less fuzzy, and better for garments that need a cleaner look like joggers and lightweight hoodies. French terry feels more "natural" against skin, while polar fleece feels more "technical" and cozy.
Standard everyday fleece hoodies: 220–300 GSM — this is the sweet spot that feels substantial without being too heavy. Premium heavyweight hoodies (streetwear positioning): 300–380 GSM for that thick, structured look. Lightweight layering hoodies: 150–220 GSM for spring/fall or indoor wear. Below 180 GSM, a hoodie can feel flimsy and transparent at the seams — we recommend 220 GSM as the minimum for a quality perception.
All fleece has some pilling tendency because of the brushed surface — it's the nature of the construction. However, quality fleece uses longer-staple polyester fibers and anti-pilling treatments (singeing, bio-polishing, or anti-pill enzyme finishes) that dramatically reduce pilling. We test all fleece to 10,000+ Martindale cycles and guarantee Grade 3+ pilling resistance. Lower-quality fleece pills after 2–3 washes; ours is engineered for 50+ wash cycles. Washing inside out and avoiding fabric softener also helps extend pill-free life.
Yes — 100% polyester fleece can be sublimated with excellent results, making it ideal for all-over print hoodies, custom team wear, and branded streetwear. This is one of fleece's biggest advantages over cotton-based fabrics. French terry with high polyester content (65/35 or higher poly) can also be sublimated, though results are slightly less vibrant than pure polyester. Cotton-rich French terry cannot be sublimated — it requires screen printing or heat transfer instead.
It depends on the GSM and construction. Lightweight micro fleece (100–180 GSM) is surprisingly breathable — it wicks moisture while providing light insulation, suitable for active outdoor use. Medium fleece (200–300 GSM) offers warmth with moderate breathability — the most versatile range. Heavy sherpa and bonded fleece (350+ GSM) are designed primarily for heat retention with minimal breathability — best for stationary outdoor activities or extreme cold. For activewear crossover, we recommend micro fleece or brushed French terry.
