Hoodie fabrics are a distinct category of heavyweight knits engineered for warmth, structure, and comfort. Unlike standard t-shirt knits, hoodie fabrics are built with loop-back constructions (French terry) or brushed-inner surfaces (fleece) that trap air for insulation.

"The difference between a $15 hoodie and a $75 hoodie isn't the design — it's the fabric. A 340 GSM sponge fleece with 80/20 cotton-poly blend and bio-polish finish feels fundamentally different from a 260 GSM standard fleece."

80/20 cotton/polyester is the industry standard for hoodies — it delivers a predominantly cotton feel while the 20% polyester dramatically reduces shrinkage (from 6–8% down to 2–3%) and improves durability. For stretch hoodies with ribbed cuffs and waistbands, adding 3–5% spandex provides the necessary recovery without sacrificing warmth. The sweet spot for most hoodies is 300–360 GSM. 300 GSM gives a medium-weight hoodie suitable for layering and mild climates. 340–360 GSM produces a substantial, premium-feeling hoodie with excellent warmth. Above 380 GSM, the fabric becomes very heavy — better for oversized streetwear or extreme cold. For lightweight zip-ups, 240–280 GSM French terry works well.
French terry has a flat face with unbrushed loops on the back — it's breathable, lighter, and drapes well. Fleece (or brushed fleece) has those back loops brushed into a fuzzy pile that traps air for insulation — it's warmer, thicker, and has a softer inner hand feel. Same base knit construction, different finishing step. Think of French terry as the loop side of a towel and fleece as what happens when you brush those loops into fuzz.
Sponge fleece is a premium fleece variant where the brushed back is treated to create an ultra-soft, spongy texture — like touching a cloud. It uses finer yarns (30s–40s combed) and a tighter knit before brushing, resulting in a fabric that's dense but incredibly plush. It's the fabric used by premium streetwear brands like Essentials, Fear of God, and high-end private labels. Cost is 25–40% higher than standard fleece.
80/20 cotton/polyester is the most popular — it gives a predominantly cotton feel with enough polyester to reduce shrinkage and improve durability. 65/35 is more affordable and more dimensionally stable but feels slightly less natural. 100% cotton fleece is the softest but shrinks the most (6–8%) and costs 20–30% more. For stretch hoodies, adding 3–5% spandex is ideal for comfort without losing the hoodie's structured feel.
Standard cotton-heavy hoodie fabrics (80/20, 100% cotton) cannot be sublimated — the cotton fibers don't accept sublimation dye. For sublimated hoodies, we use a special 100% polyester fleece with a brushed back that mimics the warmth and feel of cotton fleece. The result is a fully sublimatable hoodie with all-over print capability, though the hand feel is slightly different from cotton fleece.
Slub fleece uses yarns with intentional thickness variations — some sections are thin, others are thick — creating a textured, slightly irregular surface. This gives hoodies a vintage, handcrafted look with visual depth. Slub fleece is popular in streetwear and fashion-forward brands that want to stand out from smooth, uniform fabrics. It costs 10–15% more than standard fleece due to the specialized yarn.
Quality hoodie fabrics shouldn't pill noticeably — but it depends on yarn quality and finish. We use combed cotton yarns (not cheaper open-end yarns) and apply anti-pilling finish as standard, achieving Grade 3–4 on the Martindale pilling scale. If you've experienced pilling before, it was likely from carded/open-end yarns without anti-pilling treatment — a cost-cutting shortcut we don't take.
