What Is Merino Wool Fabric?

Merino wool is a premium natural fiber sourced from Merino sheep — primarily bred in Australia and New Zealand. Unlike standard wool which can feel coarse and itchy, superfine merino (18.5–19.5 microns) is thinner than a human hair and feels as soft as cotton against the skin, making it the only wool suitable for next-to-skin sportswear.

In sportswear, merino is typically knitted into fine-gauge single jersey or interlock constructions. We produce merino in 100% superfine merino, 96/4 merino-spandex (for added stretch and recovery), 50/50 merino-tencel (for enhanced drape and cooling), and 85/15 merino-nylon (for abrasion-resistant outdoor garments) — across 140 to 300 GSM.

Every batch is Superwash treated for machine washability, tested for micron accuracy (±0.5μ), shrinkage (≤2%), pilling (3–4 grade), and colorfastness (4+ grade). We source top-tier Australian and South American merino tops for consistent quality.

Temperature Regulation

The hollow core traps dead air for insulation when cold. When hot, the fiber absorbs sweat vapor and releases it to the outside — actively cooling the body.

Moisture Wicking Core

Merino can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor inside the fiber core — keeping the surface dry against the skin while still transporting sweat outward.

Not if it's superfine. Wool itchiness is caused by fiber thickness — anything over 23 microns feels prickly against the skin. We use 18.5–19.5 micron merino, classified as 'superfine,' which stays well below the human pain receptor threshold of ~22 microns. It feels as soft as cotton against the skin, with no prickling or scratching sensation.
Yes — but only if it's Superwash treated. Raw merino has overlapping scales on the fiber surface that interlock and 'felt' (shrink and mat permanently) when exposed to heat, agitation, and water together. Our Superwash treatment removes or coats these scales, making the fabric machine washable. All our merino is Superwash treated by default. Wash on cold/gentle cycle, lay flat to dry.
Two reasons. First, merino absorbs moisture vapor inside the fiber core, not on the surface. Bacteria that cause odor need a moist surface to grow — by keeping the surface dry, merino denies them their environment. Second, the keratin protein in wool naturally binds and neutralizes sulfur-based odor compounds. A merino base layer can genuinely be worn for 3–7 days without developing noticeable odor.
Yes, but with strict temperature limits. Standard plastisol inks cure at 160°C (320°F), which will shrink and damage merino. We use low-cure plastisol inks (curing at 130°C/265°F) or water-based inks for screen printing. DTG is possible but requires low-heat pretreatment. Sublimation and high-heat transfers are absolutely NOT compatible — they will destroy the wool. Embroidery works excellently with no heat at all.
Merino can pill moderately, especially in high-friction areas like underarms and side seams. Pilling is caused by short fiber ends working their way to the surface and tangling. We mitigate this by using long-staple merino tops (60mm+ vs standard 40mm) and applying anti-pilling bio-polish finishes. Initial pilling in the first few washes is normal — it sheds loose fibers and then stabilizes.
Micron (μ) measures the average diameter of the wool fiber in micrometers. Lower = finer and softer. 18.5μ is 'superfine' — thinner than a human hair (~70μ). Standard wool is 23–30μ (itchy). The scale: <15.5μ = ultrafine (very rare/expensive), 15.6–18.5μ = superfine, 18.6–20.5μ = fine, 20.6–23μ = medium, >23μ = strong (itchy). We use 18.5μ as our standard for the best softness-to-cost ratio.
Three reasons: First, merino is a premium agricultural product — sheep breeding, shearing, and fiber sorting are labor-intensive. Second, fine-gauge knitting machines for merino run slower than standard polyester machines. Third, merino requires specialized dyeing at lower temperatures (below 100°C) to prevent fiber damage. Expect to pay 3–5x more per meter than polyester, but merino's multi-day wearability, odor resistance, and natural performance justify the premium for outdoor and travel markets.
