Sweatshirt Fabrics
Engineered for coziness, structure, and relentless wear. Our French terry, polar fleece, sherpa, and brushed fleece constructions deliver the weight, warmth, and hand feel that defines a premium sweatshirt.
What Makes Sweatshirt Fabric Different?
Sweatshirt fabric is a category of knitted textile built around one principle: trapping warm air against the body while remaining comfortable enough for all-day wear. Unlike performance sportswear that wicks moisture away, sweatshirt fabric is designed to insulate, drape, and feel substantial.
The two fundamental constructions are French terry (unbrushed loops on the reverse) and fleece (loops brushed into a fuzzy pile). Within these two families, variations in GSM, blend ratio, and finish create the entire spectrum from lightweight spring pullovers to heavyweight winter hoodies.
At Dhalay International, we manufacture five primary sweatshirt fabric types — each pre-shrunk through compaction finishing to <3% residual shrinkage, tested for pilling resistance (Martindale 8,000+ cycles), and colorfastness (Grade 4+) before shipping.
Non-Negotiable Standards
Every sweatshirt fabric we produce must meet these minimum benchmarks — no exceptions.
French Terry vs. Fleece — Side by Side
These are the two foundational sweatshirt constructions. Understanding the difference is the first step in specifying the right fabric.

Five Sweatshirt Fabric Options
From lightweight spring terry to heavyweight winter sherpa — each construction serves a distinct market segment.
French Terry (80/20 Cotton-Poly)
The gold standard for premium streetwear sweatshirts. Clean drape, visible loop texture inside, and a structured silhouette that holds its shape wash after wash.
Polar Fleece (60/40 Cotton-Poly)
Warm, soft, and cost-effective. The brushed interior traps air for insulation — the workhorse fabric for hoodies, sweatpants, and cold-weather basics.
Brushed Fleece (80/20 Cotton-Poly)
Premium fleece with an ultra-soft brushed finish that feels like cashmere against the skin. The extra brushing step adds cost but dramatically improves hand feel.
Sherpa Fleece (70/30 Poly-Cotton)
Deep, curly pile that mimics sheep's wool. Exceptional insulation for extreme cold — used as hoodie lining or standalone sherpa pullovers and jackets.
Heavyweight Fleece (80/20 Cotton-Poly)
Dense, substantial fabric at 380–450 GSM with a tight-knit face and thick brushed backing. The choice for luxury streetwear hoodies that feel expensive.
What Wearers Actually Feel
These aren't just lab specs — they're the sensory qualities that determine whether your sweatshirt becomes someone's daily uniform or gathers dust.
Thermal Insulation
Traps body heat through air pockets in the loop or pile structure. Fleece traps more air than terry — up to 40% warmer at the same GSM.
Soft Hand Feel
Brushed fleece and French terry deliver a gentle, non-irritating touch. The hand feel improves with each wash as fibers soften further.
Shrinkage Control
Pre-compacted during finishing to <3% residual shrinkage. No surprise sizing changes after the first wash — critical for retail customer satisfaction.
Shape Retention
Polyester content (20%+) prevents the bagging and stretching that pure cotton sweatshirts develop at elbows, cuffs, and waistbands.
Low Pilling
Anti-pilling finish and quality yarn selection resist the fuzz balls that make cheap sweatshirts look worn after three washes. Grade 4+ minimum.
Breathability
French terry excels here — the open loop structure allows air circulation. Fleece is less breathable but compensates with warmth.
Substantial Drape
Higher GSM creates the weighted, luxurious drape that signals quality. A 360 GSM sweatshirt hangs differently from a 280 GSM one — customers notice.
Wash Durability
Maintains color, softness, and shape through 50+ wash cycles. Colorfastness Grade 4+ ensures logos and solids stay vibrant.
Our Shrinkage Control Guarantee
Uncontrolled shrinkage is the #1 reason customers return sweatshirts. We eliminate this through a multi-step compaction process — here's what we verify:

Honest Assessment
We focus on 80/20 cotton-poly French terry as the primary sweatshirt fabric — here's an unfiltered look at its strengths and trade-offs.
- Excellent balance of cotton softness and polyester durability
- Clean, structured drape that looks premium on the body
- Loop-back texture adds visual interest and breathability
- Smooth face takes screen printing, embroidery, and DTG beautifully
- Pre-shrunk to <3% — minimal sizing issues for retail customers
- Good breathability — comfortable for indoor wear and layering
- Wide GSM range (280–360) covers most market segments
- Proven construction — the same fabric architecture used by top streetwear brands
- Cannot be sublimated at 80/20 — requires 65/35+ polyester for sublimation
- Moderate warmth — not sufficient for extreme cold without a lining
- Loop-back can snag on Velcro, jewelry, or rough surfaces
- Cotton content absorbs moisture — not ideal for rain or heavy sweat
- Heavier than performance fabrics — less packable for travel
- Requires careful washing — avoid high heat to maintain shrinkage control
- Lower abrasion resistance than 100% polyester fleece
- Not water-resistant — absorbs rain and snow without treatment
Four Decoration Methods
Sweatshirts are the ideal canvas for branding — the flat, stable surface takes almost any decoration method.

Screen Printing
The workhorse of sweatshirt decoration. Plastisol inks for bold, opaque logos on dark fabrics. Water-based inks for a softer, vintage feel. Ideal for chest logos, back prints, and sleeve designs.

Embroidery
Thread-based decoration that adds texture and perceived value. The #1 choice for left-chest logos on premium hoodies and crew necks. Available in 1–15 colors with 3D puff option.

Sublimation
Requires poly-rich blends (65/35+). Dyes the fabric at a molecular level for zero-hand-feel, all-over prints that won't crack or peel. Best for streetwear drops and custom patterns.
