What Separates Good From Great

These aren't marketing terms — they're measurable qualities that determine whether your tee ends up in the weekly rotation or the donation pile.

Hand Feel

The surface smoothness perceived by touch. Determined by yarn quality, knit tightness, and finishing. Combed ring-spun feels noticeably smoother than carded open-end.

Shrinkage Control

Pre-compacted to <3% residual shrinkage. Without this, a 100% cotton tee shrinks a full size after the first wash — the #1 cause of t-shirt returns.

Colorfastness

Reactive dyeing forms a chemical bond with cotton fibers for Grade 4+ wash fastness. Cheap direct dyes fade noticeably within 5–10 washes.

Pilling Resistance

Fuzz balls form when short fibers work loose from friction. Combed cotton (fewer short fibers) + anti-pill finish = Grade 4+ resistance through 50+ washes.

Air permeability through the knit structure. Cotton jersey excels here — the open V-pattern allows air circulation that synthetic knits can't match.

Shape Retention

Jersey is a single-knit construction where each stitch is formed by a single needle, creating a distinct V-shaped pattern on the face side and interlocking purl loops on the reverse. It's lightweight, stretchy (20–25% natural stretch), and drapes softly — making it by far the most common knit construction for t-shirts worldwide. Single jersey curls at cut edges (which is why t-shirt hems don't unravel but do roll slightly). Double jersey and interlock are heavier variants that look the same on both sides and don't curl — used for premium and structured tees. If you've ever worn a t-shirt, you've worn jersey.
Carded cotton is the base process — raw cotton is cleaned and carded (brushed) to align fibers, but short fibers and impurities remain. The resulting fabric is adequate but slightly rough, with visible specks and lower strength. It's 10–15% cheaper. Combed cotton goes through an additional fine-combing step that removes 15–25% of the shortest fibers, leaving only the longest, strongest, cleanest fibers. The resulting yarn is smoother, stronger, more uniform, and significantly more pill-resistant. The difference is visible and tactile — run your hand over a carded cotton tee and a combed cotton tee side by side and you'll feel it immediately. For any brand positioning above "promotional giveaway," combed cotton is the minimum standard.
Neither is objectively better — they optimize for different things. 100% cotton is softer, more breathable, and feels more natural, but shrinks 5–8% untreated, pills faster, loses shape at the collar and hem, and wrinkles easily. Cotton-polyester (60/40) is more durable, shrinks less (2–3% untreated), holds shape better, wrinkles less, and costs 8–12% less — but feels slightly less soft and less breathable. For premium fashion brands where hand feel is everything, 100% combed cotton wins. For workwear, promotional, or value retail where durability and cost matter more, cotton-poly is the smarter choice. Many successful brands offer both — cotton for their "premium" line and cotton-poly for their "essentials" line.
With proper dyeing and finishing, a quality t-shirt should maintain acceptable color for 40–60 washes. The key variable is the dye method: reactive dyeing (what we use) forms a permanent chemical bond with cotton fibers, achieving colorfastness Grade 4+ on the ISO 105-C06 scale. Direct dyeing (used by budget manufacturers) merely coats the fiber surface and fades noticeably within 5–10 washes. Factors that accelerate fading: hot water washing, harsh detergents with bleach, direct sunlight drying, and cheap dye processes. We use reactive dyes exclusively and provide colorfastness test reports with every order. Expect minimal visible fading through 50+ normal wash cycles.
Only polyester-rich fabrics can be sublimated. 100% cotton t-shirts cannot be sublimated at all — the dye has nothing to bond with. 60/40 cotton-poly will produce very faint, washed-out results because there isn't enough polyester. For effective sublimation on t-shirts, you need minimum 65% polyester content — ideally 100% polyester jersey for the most vibrant results, or 80/20 poly-cotton as a compromise. We offer sublimation-ready t-shirt fabrics in both compositions. The trade-off: polyester tees feel less natural and breathable than cotton, but the all-over print capability is unmatched for sports teams, streetwear, and custom design brands.
Ring-spinning is a yarn-making process that continuously twists and thins cotton fibers into a tight, fine, uniform yarn using a ring-and-traveler mechanism. The result is softer, smoother, and significantly stronger than open-end (OE) spun yarn, which is made by a faster, cheaper rotating rotor process. Open-end yarn is rougher, weaker, and pills faster — but it's 15–20% cheaper to produce. If a fabric listing doesn't specify "ring-spun," it's almost certainly open-end. The highest quality tier is "ring-spun combed" cotton — ring-spun yarn made from combed (short-fiber-removed) cotton. This is the gold standard for premium t-shirts and what we recommend for any brand above the promotional tier.
