What Makes T-Shirt Fabric Different?
T-shirt fabric is the most competitive textile category on earth. Every percentage point of quality — in yarn, knit, dye, and finish — translates directly into whether your tee feels like a $5 commodity or a $30 branded garment. The difference isn't magic. It's specification.
The foundation is single jersey knit — a construction where each stitch is formed by a single needle creating a distinct V-pattern on the face and purl loops on the reverse. Within this single construction, the variables are enormous: yarn type (carded, combed, ring-spun), yarn count (20/s to 40/s), GSM (120–250), fiber composition, and dye method — each creating a distinctly different product.

Premium+The Quality Ladder
Yarn quality is the single biggest differentiator in t-shirt fabric. This is where cheap tees and premium tees diverge — before the fabric is even knit.
Carded Cotton (Open-End Spun)
Raw cotton is cleaned and carded (brushed) to align fibers, then spun using a fast open-end rotor process. Short fibers remain, creating a rougher surface with visible impurities. Adequate for promotional and budget retail — not for brands that care about hand feel.
Combed Cotton (Ring-Spun)
After carding, cotton passes through fine combs that remove 15–25% of the shortest fibers. The remaining long fibers are ring-spun into a tighter, smoother yarn. This is the minimum standard for any branded t-shirt — noticeably smoother, stronger, and more pill-resistant than carded.
Ring-Spun Combed (Fine Count 30/s–40/s)
The gold standard. Finer yarn counts (higher thread count per gram) create a denser, silkier, more uniform fabric. The combination of combed fibers + ring-spinning + fine count produces the softest, smoothest, most durable cotton jersey available. What premium fashion brands specify.

100% Combed Cotton Jersey
The industry gold standard for everyday t-shirts. Natural feel, breathable, and universally accepted. The safest choice for any brand entering the market.
60/40 Cotton-Poly Jersey
The workhorse blend. More durable and shrink-resistant than 100% cotton at lower cost. Ideal for workwear, promotional, and high-volume retail basics.
Tri-Blend Jersey (50/25/25)
The premium casual option. Cotton, poly, and rayon create a vintage heathered texture with unmatched softness and drape. For elevated brands.
100% Polyester Jersey
The sublimation champion. Full all-over print capability with zero hand feel. Essential for sports teams, streetwear drops, and custom design brands.
Cotton-Spandex Jersey (95/5)
The stretch option. Adding 5% spandex creates a fitted, body-conforming tee with 30–40% stretch recovery. Popular for women's fashion and athletic-adjacent casual.
What Separates Good From Great
These aren't marketing terms — they're measurable qualities that determine whether your tee ends up in the weekly rotation or the donation pile.
Hand Feel
The surface smoothness perceived by touch. Determined by yarn quality, knit tightness, and finishing. Combed ring-spun feels noticeably smoother than carded open-end.
Shrinkage Control
Pre-compacted to <3% residual shrinkage. Without this, a 100% cotton tee shrinks a full size after the first wash — the #1 cause of t-shirt returns.
Colorfastness
Reactive dyeing forms a chemical bond with cotton fibers for Grade 4+ wash fastness. Cheap direct dyes fade noticeably within 5–10 washes.
Pilling Resistance
Fuzz balls form when short fibers work loose from friction. Combed cotton (fewer short fibers) + anti-pill finish = Grade 4+ resistance through 50+ washes.
Breathability
Air permeability through the knit structure. Cotton jersey excels here — the open V-pattern allows air circulation that synthetic knits can't match.
Shape Retention
Collar, cuffs, and hem maintain their dimensions through 50+ washes. Polyester content and quality ribbing at key stress points prevent stretching and bagging.
GSM Consistency
±5% GSM tolerance across the roll. Inconsistent GSM creates visible weight variations within a single batch — a telltale sign of low-quality manufacturing.
Skin Safety
pH 5.5–7 (skin-neutral), zero formaldehyde, OEKO-TEX 100 certified. Critical for garments worn directly against skin for 12+ hours.

Four Decoration Methods
T-shirts are the #1 printed garment in the world — the flat, stable jersey surface handles every method.

Screen Printing
The workhorse. Plastisol for bold opacity on dark tees, water-based for soft hand on lights. Handles 1–12 colors, excellent durability, lowest per-unit cost at volume. The default for 90% of t-shirt brands.

Direct-to-Garment (DTG)
Inkjet printing directly onto the tee. Zero setup cost, full-color photorealistic output, and no minimum order. Best for small batches, custom orders, and e-commerce brands with many SKUs.

Sublimation
Dyes the fabric at molecular level for all-over, edge-to-edge prints with zero texture. Only works on polyester-rich fabrics — 100% poly jersey or 80/20 poly-cotton. Unmatched for custom designs.

Embroidery
Thread-based decoration for a textured, premium finish. Best for small left-chest logos on heavyweight tees and polos. Not ideal for large designs on lightweight fabrics — it can cause puckering.
