Understanding Tracksuit Fabrics
Tracksuit fabric is not a single material — it is a category of medium-to-heavyweight knit fabrics specifically chosen for their ability to trap body heat, withstand frequent wear and washing, and maintain a structured, presentable appearance. The four primary constructions we manufacture are polar fleece, French terry, brushed interlock, and waffle knit, each occupying a different position on the warmth-weight-breathability spectrum.
The critical decision in tracksuit fabric selection is the polyester vs. poly-cotton question. 100% polyester tracksuit fabrics can be fully sublimated — edge-to-edge custom designs with unlimited colors, gradients, and photographic detail. Poly-cotton blends (typically 65/35 or 80/20) cannot be sublimated — the cotton fibers reject sublimation dye — so you are limited to solid colors applied during yarn or piece dyeing. Poly-cotton does offer a slightly softer, more natural hand feel and is preferred by some traditional markets (particularly in the UK and South Asia for school uniforms and club tracksuits), but it sacrifices the design flexibility that sublimation provides.
Every tracksuit fabric batch is tested for GSM consistency (±5% tolerance), pilling resistance (minimum Grade 3 on the Martindale scale for fleece), color fastness to washing and light, shrinkage control (must remain under 3% after three washes), and sublimation transfer quality for polyester variants. We stock anti-pill treated fleece as standard and offer both matte and brushed surface finishes across our range.

What Tracksuit Fabrics Must Deliver
Tracksuit fabrics serve a different performance brief than lightweight sportswear — warmth retention and durability lead, breathability follows.
Thermal Insulation
All tracksuit fabrics trap a layer of still air between the fabric and the skin. Fleece is the most effective due to its napped surface creating multiple micro-air-pockets. Waffle knit achieves similar insulation through its textured grid structure without the fuzzy appearance.
Moisture Wicking
100% polyester tracksuit fabrics wick sweat to the outer surface where it can evaporate. Poly-cotton blends wick more slowly because cotton fibers absorb and hold moisture rather than passing it through. For active warm-up use, polyester is always the better performer.
Wash Durability
Tracksuits endure more wash cycles than almost any other garment type — often 2–3 times per week for team sport applications. Quality tracksuit fabric must maintain its shape, color, and surface texture through 150–200+ washes without shrinking, pilling excessively, or fading.
Shape Retention
Unlike stretch fabrics that recover via spandex, tracksuit fabrics rely on the knit structure itself to maintain shape. Quality circular knit tracksuit fabric should not bag at knees, elbows, or seat — the knit must be tight enough to resist distortion under normal wear stress.
Comfortable Hand Feel
Tracksuits are worn for extended periods — during travel, on sidelines, in recovery. The inner surface must feel soft against bare skin. Brushed interiors and fleece nap provide this. Unbrushed French terry loops can feel slightly rough on sensitive skin, which is why many premium terry tracksuits are brushed on the inside.
Appropriate Weight
A tracksuit must feel substantial without being heavy. The ideal perception is 'quality weight' — the garment drapes well, has body, and feels like it will last. Too light and it feels cheap; too heavy and it restricts movement and feels cumbersome during activity.
Structured Silhouette
Unlike lightweight sportswear that clings to the body, tracksuits should hold a clean, structured shape — shoulders should stay square, pants should hang with a clean line. This requires a fabric with enough body and stiffness to resist crumpling when the wearer is seated or leaning.
Pill Resistance
Pilling is the number-one quality complaint in tracksuits. When fibers break and tangle into small balls on the surface, the garment looks worn and cheap regardless of its actual age. Anti-pill treatments, tighter knit structures, and higher-quality yarn all contribute to pill resistance.

- Not suitable for high-intensity exercise — tracksuit fabrics are designed for warmth, which becomes a liability during vigorous activity. You will overheat in a tracksuit during a match or intense training session
- Pilling — particularly on fleece, where the napped surface is inherently prone to fiber tangling. Even anti-pill fleece will eventually show some pilling in high-friction areas after 60–80 washes
- Heavier weight — even the lightest tracksuit fabric (200 GSM) is heavier than most sportswear fabrics, which affects packability for travel and perceived comfort in warm environments
- Longer drying time — the dense knit structure and (on fleece) the napped surface hold more water than lightweight meshes, meaning longer line-dry or tumble-dry times
- Poly-cotton cannot be sublimated — choosing poly-cotton for its natural hand feel means sacrificing full-design sublimation, limiting you to solid colors and simple color-blocking
- Fleece appearance degrades — the napped surface that makes fleece warm also makes it the most visually fragile tracksuit fabric. Matting, pilling, and nap flattening are visible aging signs that don't occur on smooth-surface fabrics
Branding Tracksuit Garments
Tracksuits offer more decoration flexibility than most sportswear because the heavier fabric supports techniques that would damage lightweight knits.
Full Sublimation
The dominant method for 100% polyester tracksuits. Edge-to-edge custom designs covering the entire garment — team colors, sponsors, player names, intricate patterns. On fleece, the napped surface softens the finest detail slightly compared to interlock, but colors remain vivid and permanent. Standard 200–210°C for 45–60 seconds. French terry's smooth outer face produces the sharpest results; fleece produces the most vibrant due to the nap's light-diffusing effect on the dye. Not available on poly-cotton blends.
Screen Printing
Works on all tracksuit fabric types including poly-cotton. The heavier fabric provides a stable surface that accepts screen print well without the distortion issues of lightweight knits. Used for chest logos, back numbers, sleeve sponsors, and simple designs. Plastisol and water-based inks both work — water-based is preferred for a softer hand on fleece. For multi-color designs on dark fleece, an underbase white layer is needed. Screen print on fleece has excellent durability because the ink bonds with the napped surface fibers.
Embroidery
The premium decoration option that is uniquely suited to heavy tracksuit fabrics — embroidery would be too stiff and heavy on lightweight sportswear but sits perfectly on fleece and French terry. Used for club crests, school logos, and brand badges where a raised, textured, high-perceived-value look is desired. Embroidery on fleece can compress the nap slightly around the stitched area, creating a subtle visual frame that actually enhances the premium feel. Recommended for logos under 10×10 cm; larger embroidery areas add too much weight and stiffness.

Full sublimation on 100% polyester for maximum design freedom. Solid piece-dyed or yarn-dyed colors on poly-cotton. Hybrid: poly-cotton body with sublimated polyester accent panels.
Top/Bottom Split
Many brands specify different GSM or even different constructions for jacket vs. pants — lighter top for arm mobility, heavier bottom for leg warmth. We can match colors across different weights.
