What Is 160 GSM Sportswear Fabric?

160 GSM sportswear fabric sits in the mid-weight sweet spot of performance textiles — heavy enough to feel premium and hold structure, light enough to remain breathable and comfortable for active use. It is, by volume, the single most requested GSM across our entire sportswear catalog.

"160 GSM is the weight where durability, drape, and breathability intersect — it's why more brands default to this weight for their core collections than any other."

Our 160 GSM range spans 100% polyester, poly-spandex blends (92/8, 85/15, 80/20), and cotton-polyester blends (65/35, 50/50) — each engineered for specific end-uses from sublimated team kits to casual training apparel.

Every roll is tested for weight consistency (±3 GSM), colorfastness (Grade 4+), pilling resistance (Martindale 4+), and shrinkage control (<2%) before it enters production.

Why 160 GSM Is the Industry Default

The properties that make 160 GSM the most trusted weight in sportswear manufacturing.

Perfect Balance

Neither too light nor too heavy — the ideal middle ground for year-round wear across all climates.

Sublimation-Ready

Optimal fiber density for vivid, edge-to-edge sublimation printing without ink bleed or washout.

Excellent Drape

Enough body to hold garment shape and structure, yet flows naturally with body movement.

Moisture Wicking

Polyester and poly-spandex blends at this weight wick sweat efficiently and dry within minutes.

Shape Retention

Maintains garment form wash after wash — minimal shrinkage (<2%) and excellent dimensional stability.

Stretch Options

Poly-spandex blends (8–20% spandex) add 4-way stretch without losing the 160 GSM structure.

Cutting Efficiency

Mid-weight stability makes it easy to cut and sew — fewer layer shifts on the cutting table.

Pro tip: Many successful brands run both — 100% polyester 160 GSM for sublimated team wear and performance lines, and 65/35 cotton-poly 160 GSM for their casual/lifestyle and retail ranges. We can produce both from the same production run to streamline your supply chain.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • The most versatile GSM — works for tops, bottoms, and accessories
  • Optimal density for sublimation printing with zero ink bleed
  • Year-round weight — no seasonal limitations
  • Excellent shape retention and dimensional stability
  • Easy to cut and sew — high cutting table efficiency
  • Available in widest range of blend compositions
  • Cost-effective — no premium pricing vs. specialty weights
  • Proven track record — used by thousands of brands globally
Disadvantages
  • Not lightweight enough for ultra-breathable summer jerseys
  • Not heavy enough for premium heavyweight track suits
  • 100% polyester can feel "plasticky" vs. natural fibers
  • Cotton-poly blends at this weight can pill after 30+ washes
  • Mid-weight means it's not the best at any single extreme
  • Polyester version retains body odor more than cotton blends
Our mitigation: For the "plasticky" feel, we offer moisture-wicking finishes and soft-brush treatments that give 160 GSM polyester a cotton-like hand. For pilling on cotton-poly blends, we use anti-pilling yarn treatments and recommend enzyme washing. For odor, we apply anti-microbial silver-ion finishes that last 50+ washes.

Frequently Asked Questions

160 GSM is arguably the most versatile weight for sportswear. It offers substantial body and durability without feeling heavy — perfect for tracksuits, training pants, polo shirts, basketball jerseys, and lightweight hoodies. It's the weight most brands default to for year-round collections.
Yes — 160 GSM polyester and poly-spandex fabrics are excellent for sublimation printing. The weight provides enough fiber density for rich, vibrant color transfer without ink bleeding. It's one of the most popular GSM choices for sublimated team wear, custom uniforms, and all-over print designs.
160 GSM 100% polyester is lighter in hand feel, wicks moisture faster, and is fully sublimation-ready. 160 GSM cotton-polyester (65/35 or 50/50) has a softer, more natural feel, better breathability, and is ideal for screen printing — but cannot be sublimated. Choose polyester for performance wear, cotton-poly for casual/lifestyle sportswear.
Not at all. 160 GSM in 100% polyester with moisture-wicking finish feels lightweight and breathable even in warm conditions. It's thinner than a typical cotton t-shirt (180–220 GSM). For hot climates, we recommend open-ended polyester or mesh-panel constructions at 160 GSM for enhanced airflow.
Absolutely. We provide free A4-size fabric swatches (up to 3 options) shipped via DHL/FedEx at no charge. We can include both 100% polyester and poly-spandex samples at 160 GSM so you can compare the hand feel and stretch.
It depends on the spandex percentage: 92/8 offers 15–20% stretch (light compression), 85/15 gives 25–35% stretch (moderate compression), and 80/20 delivers 40–50% stretch (true compression). All offer 4-way stretch with excellent recovery — the fabric returns to its original shape within seconds.
100% polyester 160 GSM shrinks less than 1% — essentially zero shrinkage in practice. Cotton-polyester blends (65/35) may shrink 2–4% even when pre-shrunk at the mill. We recommend specifying pre-shrunk fabric for cotton-poly orders, and we test every batch to confirm shrinkage is within tolerance.
All 160 GSM fabrics carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. Colorfastness is tested to Grade 4+ (AATCC 61), pilling resistance to Grade 4+ (Martindale), and shrinkage to <2% (ISO 6330). Additional certifications (bluesign®, REACH, GRS recycled) available on request for specific orders.
