What Is 280 GSM Sportswear Fabric?

280 GSM sportswear fabric sits at the top of the standard sportswear weight range — the boundary between performance textiles and true fleece. At this density, fabric ceases to be merely "heavy" and becomes structurally rigid, thermally insulating, and unmistakably premium.

"280 GSM is where sportswear becomes outerwear. It's the weight that transforms a hoodie from a layering piece into a statement garment — the kind customers reach for first on cold mornings."

Our 280 GSM range includes smooth-back polyester, fleece-back polyester, poly-spandex blends (92/8, 85/15), cotton-polyester (65/35, 50/50), and French terry constructions — each built for specific cold-weather and premium applications.

Every batch is tested for weight consistency (±4 GSM at this weight), thermal resistance (TOG rating), pilling resistance (Martindale Grade 4+), tear strength, colorfastness, and shrinkage control (<2%) before release.

280 GSM is the heaviest weight before entering true fleece territory (320+ GSM). It delivers maximum structure and warmth while still being sewable on standard sportswear machines. Fleece-back options at 280 GSM provide the thermal performance of 350 GSM unbrushed fabric — making it the most warmth-efficient weight in our range. Custom weights (270–290 GSM) available on orders above 1,500 pcs.

What 280 GSM Delivers

Properties that only become possible at this weight class — warmth, rigidity, and premium presence.

Thermal Insulation

Fleece-back constructions trap body heat effectively — equivalent warmth to 350 GSM unbrushed fabric.

Maximum Structure

Garments stand on their own — clean architectural lines, zero sagging, and a tailored rigid silhouette.

Extreme Durability

60%+ more resistant to pilling, tearing, and abrasion than 160 GSM — garments outlast lighter equivalents by years.

Wind Blocking

The dense weave structure at 280 GSM naturally blocks wind penetration — no coating or membrane required.

Luxurious Weight

The physical heft signals quality — customers associate the weight with premium craftsmanship and higher value.

Deep Sublimation

Maximum fiber density for the richest possible dye absorption — colors appear deep and jewel-toned.

Cold-Weather Optimized

Designed specifically for autumn/winter ranges — the go-to weight for any garment that needs to keep athletes warm.

Pro tip: The smartest strategy is a 3-tier winter lineup — 220 GSM for the "standard winter" track suit (best seller), 280 GSM for the "premium winter" hoodie and jogger set (higher margin), and 350 GSM only for specialty fleece pieces. We can produce all three from the same dye lots for perfectly matched colors across your entire cold-weather range.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • Exceptional thermal insulation — especially with fleece-back construction
  • Maximum garment structure — clean lines, no sagging, architectural silhouette
  • Naturally wind-blocking without any additional coating or membrane
  • Highest durability in the standard sportswear range — 60%+ more pill-resistant than 160 GSM
  • Fleece-back option provides warmth of 350 GSM at lower weight and cost
  • Unmatched perceived value — the "heavy = premium" consumer psychology works strongly here
  • Excellent for embroidery — supports the densest stitch patterns without distortion
  • Garments maintain their shape and structure for years with proper care
Disadvantages
  • 25–40% more expensive per meter than 160 GSM equivalents
  • Completely unsuitable for summer wear or warm-climate markets
  • Restricted range of motion compared to lighter weights
  • Sublimation requires 55–65 second press time with precise calibration
  • Significantly higher shipping weight increases per-unit freight costs
  • Longer drying time — not ideal for frequent-wash training environments
  • Narrower seasonal window — primarily an autumn/winter fabric
Our mitigation: For the motion restriction, we offer 85/15 poly-spandex at 280 GSM that provides surprising 4-way stretch even at this weight. For sublimation, we supply calibrated press profiles specific to our 280 GSM fabrics with exact time/temperature/pressure settings. For the seasonal limitation, we recommend ordering 280 GSM as part of a multi-weight strategy — it becomes your hero product for Q4 launches.

Frequently Asked Questions

280 GSM is the heavyweight champion of sportswear fabrics. It's primarily used for premium hoodies, fleece-lined track suits, padded training jackets, rugby warm-up gear, winter joggers, and structured athleisure pieces. It's the weight you choose when warmth, structure, and a premium heavy feel are the top priorities — not lightweight performance.
Not too heavy, but it requires careful handling. 280 GSM polyester can be sublimated successfully, but press time needs to increase to 55–65 seconds (vs. 35–40s at 160 GSM) and temperature may need to be 2–3°C higher. The results are excellent — deep, rich colors — but consistent pressure across the thicker fabric is critical. We provide specific sublimation profiles for our 280 GSM fabrics.
Fleece-back (or brushed-back) means the interior side of the fabric has been mechanically brushed to create a soft, fuzzy pile surface. This traps air against the body for insulation, making the fabric significantly warmer without adding weight. A 280 GSM fleece-back polyester feels as warm as a 350 GSM unbrushed fabric — it's the most efficient way to add warmth at this weight.
280 GSM is arguably the best weight for premium sportswear hoodies. It's heavy enough to feel luxurious and hold structure through the hood, kangaroo pocket, and ribbing — but not so heavy that the hoodie becomes rigid. For ultra-plush, blanket-like hoodies, go 320+ GSM. For clean, structured athleisure hoodies, 280 GSM is perfect.
We provide free A4-size fabric swatches (up to 3 options) shipped via DHL/FedEx at no charge. For 280 GSM, we recommend requesting both smooth-back and fleece-back samples so you can feel the warmth difference and choose the right construction for your garments.
French terry is a weave construction (not a weight) characterized by loops on one side and a smooth surface on the other. Our 280 GSM French terry has these characteristic loops that create a natural air pocket for warmth. It's different from fleece-back (which is brushed smooth) — French terry has more texture, better stretch, and a more casual, premium look. Both are available at 280 GSM.
For most indoor training, yes — 280 GSM is overkill and you'd overheat. However, it's excellent for warm-up phases before training, cool-down periods, and between-session wear. For indoor training itself, 160 GSM is the better choice. Think of 280 GSM as the "before and after" fabric — what you wear to and from the gym, not during the workout.
All 280 GSM fabrics carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. Colorfastness is tested to Grade 4+ (AATCC 61), pilling resistance to Grade 4+ (Martindale), tear strength per ASTM D1424, thermal resistance (TOG rating), and shrinkage to <2% (ISO 6330). Additional certifications (bluesign®, REACH, GRS recycled) available on request for specific orders.
