What Is Interlock Knit Fabric?

Interlock knit fabric is a premium double-knit textile where two layers of single jersey are knitted simultaneously on interlocking needle beds. The result is a fabric that looks identical on both sides, has no distinct front or back, and — critically — does not curl at cut edges.

"Interlock is the fabric that elevates a polo shirt from 'good' to 'premium.' Its thickness, stability, and smooth face make it the unmistakable choice for structured, high-end sportswear."

Our range spans 100% cotton, cotton-polyester blends (65/35, 60/40), and polyester-spandex interlock (92/8, 88/12) — covering everything from soft babywear to performance polo shirts that hold embroidered logos flawlessly.

Every roll is tested for shrinkage control (<3%), pilling resistance (Grade 4+), dimensional stability, and GSM consistency before it leaves our facility.

Why Interlock Stands Apart

Properties unique to the double-knit construction that make interlock the premium choice.

No-Curl Edges

Unlike single jersey, interlock lies completely flat at cut edges — easier to sew, cleaner finished garments.

Double-Faced

Identical appearance on both sides — no wrong side, no need for lining or facing in most applications.

Dimensional Stability

Resists stretching and distortion during cutting and sewing — holds shape through production and wear.

Fully Opaque

Dense double-layer construction eliminates see-through — no undershirts needed, even in white.

Smooth Hand Feel

Even, regular surface with a soft, premium hand — feels more expensive than single jersey at the same price point.

Embroidery-Ready

Stable surface holds stitches without puckering — the preferred knit for logo embroidery on polo shirts.

Shape Retention

Maintains garment structure wash after wash — collars stay upright, hems stay flat, silhouettes hold.

Insulating Air Pocket

Double-layer trap creates a micro air pocket between layers — naturally warmer than single knits.

What It's Used For

Interlock shines in structured, premium garments where stability and presentation matter.

Interlock vs. Single Jersey

The most common question we get. Here's an honest side-by-side so you pick the right knit for every product.

Property Interlock Single Jersey
Knit Structure Double-knit (2 layers) Premium Single-knit (1 layer)
Edge Curling None Interlock Curls at cut edges
Face / Back Identical both sides Interlock Distinct V-face / purl back
Thickness Thicker, more substantial Interlock Thinner, lighter
Opacity Fully opaque Interlock Semi-transparent in light colors
Stretch Moderate (20–25%) Higher (30–40%) Jersey
Embroidery Quality Excellent — stable surface Interlock Can pucker on light weights
Breathability Good Better airflow Jersey
Cost Per Meter 20–30% higher More affordable Jersey
Drape Structured, holds shape Interlock Softer, more fluid drape
Best For Polos, hoodies, uniforms T-shirts, leggings, base layers
Pro tip: Many brands use both in the same collection — jersey for lightweight training tees and leggings, interlock for polo shirts, hoodies, and structured garments. We can supply both from the same dye lot for visual consistency across your line.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • No curl at cut edges — dramatically easier cutting and sewing
  • Identical on both sides — no wrong side, reversible potential
  • Fully opaque — no transparency even in white and light shades
  • Excellent embroidery base — stable surface prevents puckering
  • Premium, substantial hand feel that elevates perceived garment quality
  • Superior shape retention — garments hold structure wash after wash
  • Natural insulation from double-layer air pocket construction
  • Works beautifully in both cotton (natural) and polyester (performance) versions
Disadvantages
  • 20–30% more expensive than single jersey per meter
  • Heavier and less breathable — not ideal for hot-weather base layers
  • Lower stretch recovery than jersey-spandex blends
  • Cotton interlock cannot be sublimated — limited to screen/DTG/embroidery
  • Requires more yarn per meter — higher raw material consumption
  • Takes slightly longer to dry than single-knit fabrics
Our mitigation: For sublimation needs, we offer 100% polyester interlock and poly-spandex interlock that accept full-color sublimation printing perfectly while retaining all the structural benefits of the double-knit construction.

Best Methods for Interlock

Frequently Asked Questions

Single jersey is a single-knit fabric — it has a distinct front (V-shapes) and back (purl loops), and it curls at the cut edges. Interlock is a double-knit fabric where two layers of single jersey are knitted together, so both sides look identical, edges don't curl, and the fabric is thicker, more stable, and more opaque.
Yes — interlock is one of the best fabrics for polo shirts. Its thickness, stability, and smooth surface make it perfect for embroidered logos, collar construction, and a premium structured look that holds its shape wash after wash.
Only polyester-based interlock or poly-spandex interlock can be sublimated. Cotton interlock and cotton-poly blends cannot be sublimated because cotton fibers don't bond with sublimation dyes. For cotton interlock, we recommend screen printing, DTG, or embroidery instead.
Absolutely. We provide free A4-size fabric swatches (up to 3 options) shipped via DHL/FedEx at no charge. We can include different GSM weights and blend ratios so you can compare and select the perfect interlock for your product.
Interlock requires roughly double the yarn and more complex knitting machinery (two sets of needles working in tandem) compared to single jersey. This increases both raw material cost and production time. However, the result is a significantly more premium, stable, and durable fabric.
Yes — 100% cotton interlock is excellent for baby clothing. It's soft, breathable, fully opaque, has no curling edges (important for tiny garment construction), and is OEKO-TEX certified free from harmful substances.
Untreated cotton interlock can shrink 5–8%. However, we pre-shrink and compact all our interlock fabrics during finishing, guaranteeing less than 3% residual shrinkage. For polyester interlock, shrinkage is negligible (under 1%).
Both are used for polo shirts but have different textures. Interlock has a smooth, uniform surface on both sides. Piqué has a textured, waffle-like pattern created by a special knitting technique. Piqué is more traditional for classic polos, while interlock gives a smoother, more modern, and slightly dressier look.
