What Is Interlock Fabric?

Interlock is a premium double-knit fabric produced on specialized interlock circular knitting machines equipped with two sets of needles. Unlike single-jersey — which has a distinct face and back and curls at the cut edges — interlock is identical on both sides, lies completely flat, and maintains its shape through cutting, sewing, and washing.

"Interlock is the fabric specifiers reach for when jersey feels too light and flimsy, but woven fabric is too stiff. It hits the sweet spot between structure and comfort — that's why premium polo brands almost universally choose interlock over piqué or jersey."

The double-layer construction traps a thin layer of air between the two knit faces, providing better thermal insulation than single-jersey at the same GSM. This makes it the preferred choice for polo shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, dresses, and baby clothing where a substantial, premium hand feel is non-negotiable.

We produce interlock in 100% cotton, 65/35 poly-cotton, 60/40 CVC, cotton-spandex (95/5), poly-spandex (92/8), and 100% polyester — across 160 to 350 GSM with custom yarn counts and finishes.

How Interlock Is Built

Two sets of needles knit two separate layers that interlock at each wale — creating a unified double-faced fabric.

Cross-Section View
Front Face — Smooth V-Knit
Interlocked Floats — Air Gap
Back Face — Identical V-Knit

Two Identical Faces

Front and back look and feel the same — no "wrong side." Ideal for reversible garments or exposed seams.

Zero Edge Curling

The interlocking structure balances tension on both sides — cut edges stay flat, making cutting and sewing significantly easier.

Air Insulation Layer

The micro air gap between the two knit layers provides 15–20% better thermal insulation than single-jersey at the same GSM.

Natural 2-Way Stretch

Stretches 20–30% in width without spandex. Adding 5% spandex boosts recovery and stretch to 40–50%.

Available Fiber Compositions

Interlock structure works with any fiber — choose the composition that matches your performance and cost targets.

Interlock uses approximately 20% more yarn than single-jersey at the same GSM due to the double-knit structure. This extra material is what gives interlock its weight, stability, and premium hand — not just thickness, but actual density.

Stock & Custom Colors

Interlock's smooth, even surface takes dye exceptionally well — deep, rich solids with excellent colorfastness.

Interlock's double-faced structure produces exceptionally even, deep-dyed solids because both faces absorb dye at the same rate. Heathered effects available on poly-cotton interlock. Custom Pantone matching with ΔE < 1.0 accuracy.

Engineered Advantages

The double-knit structure isn't just cosmetic — it delivers measurable performance benefits over single-knit alternatives.

Double-Faced

Identical appearance on both sides — no "wrong side." Enables reversible designs and clean exposed seams.

Zero Edge Curling

Balanced interlocking tension keeps cut edges completely flat — faster cutting, easier sewing, cleaner hems.

Better Insulation

Air trapped between the two knit layers provides 15–20% more warmth than single-jersey at the same weight.

Premium Hand Feel

Smoother, denser, and more substantial than jersey — the fabric feels expensive even before any finishing.

Natural 2-Way Stretch

20–30% width stretch without any spandex — comfortable fit that moves with the body naturally.

Run & Snag Resistant

If one loop breaks, the interlocking structure prevents the run from propagating — far more durable than single-jersey.

Flat Print Surface

Smooth, even face with no pronounced texture — ideal for screen printing, DTG, and embroidery with crisp detail.

Dimensional Stability

Less distortion during sewing and wear — garments hold their shape through dozens of wash cycles.

Interlock vs Jersey vs Piqué

The three most common knit structures compared — so you pick the right construction for your product.

Property Interlock Single Jersey Piqué
Structure Double-knit, 2 faces Best Single-knit, 1 face Single-knit, textured
Hand Feel Smooth, dense, premium Interlock Soft, light Textured, waffle-like
Edge Curling None Interlock Significant Issue Minimal
Insulation Best — air-trapping Interlock Lowest — single layer Moderate
Weight (at same GSM) Feels 15–20% heavier True to GSM Lightest True to GSM
Stretch Good 2-way (20–30%) Excellent 4-way Jersey Minimal
Print Surface Flat, smooth Interlock Smooth, slight roll Textured — uneven Harder
Run Resistance Excellent Interlock Poor — runs propagate Good
Breathability Moderate Best Jersey Good — textured surface
Cost Per Meter Moderate Lowest Jersey Moderate–High
Best For Polos, hoodies, premium wear Tees, activewear, basics Classic polos, golf wear
Quick rule: Need a premium, structured fabric with no curling and great print surface? Go interlock. Need the lightest, most breathable, and cheapest option? Go jersey. Need a classic textured polo look? Go piqué. Many brands use interlock for hoodies/sweatshirts and piqué for polos — both from the same supplier for consistency.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • Double-faced — identical on both sides, no wrong side
  • Zero edge curling — dramatically easier cutting and hemming
  • 15–20% better thermal insulation than single-jersey at same GSM
  • Smooth, flat surface — the best knit structure for printing and embroidery
  • Natural 2-way stretch without any spandex addition
  • Runs and snags don't propagate — far more durable than jersey
  • Excellent dimensional stability during sewing and wear
  • Premium hand feel that commands higher retail price perception
Disadvantages
  • Uses ~20% more yarn than single-jersey — higher material cost
  • Less breathable than single-jersey due to double-layer construction
  • Slower knitting speed — interlock machines run at lower RPM than jersey machines
  • Slightly thicker seams — not ideal for ultra-lightweight garments
  • Less 4-way stretch compared to single-jersey without spandex
  • Not suitable for applications requiring extreme drape or flow
Our mitigation: We use finer yarn counts (32s–40s) to achieve lighter GSM interlock (160–180) that feels nearly as light as jersey while retaining all double-knit benefits. This reduces the weight penalty to under 10% while keeping the premium hand and zero-curl advantages.

Printing & Decoration Methods

Interlock's flat, smooth surface makes it the best knit structure for almost every decoration method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interlock is a double-knit fabric made on special interlock circular knitting machines using two sets of needles. Unlike single-jersey, which has a distinct face and back and curls at the edges, interlock looks identical on both sides, doesn't curl, and has a smoother, more substantial hand feel. The double-layer construction traps air for better insulation, making it ideal for polos, hoodies, and premium garments.
It depends on the application. Interlock is more stable, doesn't curl at edges, has better insulation, a more premium hand feel, and resists runs — making it ideal for polos, hoodies, and structured garments. Jersey is lighter, more breathable, cheaper, and has better stretch — better for basic tees and lightweight activewear. For most premium sportswear applications, interlock is the superior choice.
Only if the polyester content is 65% or higher. 65/35 TC interlock and 100% polyester interlock accept sublimation well — and the flat surface actually produces slightly better results than textured knits. 100% cotton interlock and 60/40 CVC interlock cannot be sublimated. For those, use screen printing, DTG, or embroidery instead.
100% cotton interlock shrinks approximately 3–5% after the first wash. 65/35 poly-cotton interlock shrinks only 1–2%, and 100% polyester interlock is virtually shrink-proof. We offer pre-shrunk treatment that reduces residual shrinkage to under 2% for cotton interlock and under 1% for blends. All our interlock is compacted after dyeing to minimize post-wash shrinkage.
Interlock excels in polo shirts (especially embroidered ones), hoodies, sweatshirts, premium t-shirts, baby clothing, dresses, corporate uniforms, golf wear, medical scrubs, and loungewear. Anywhere you need a structured, premium hand feel with dimensional stability — interlock is the fabric of choice. It's particularly dominant in the polo shirt category where its flat surface makes embroidery look significantly better than piqué.
Interlock is a specific type of double-knit, but not all double-knits are interlock. Interlock uses a specific needle arrangement where two sets of needles knit two separate 1×1 rib structures that interlock at each wale. Other double-knits (like rib-knit or double-jersey) have different needle timing and produce different textures. Interlock is uniquely smooth on both sides with no rib texture.
Three reasons: First, interlock uses approximately 20% more yarn per square meter because of the double-layer construction. Second, interlock knitting machines run at lower speeds than single-jersey machines, so production is slower. Third, interlock requires more precise machine setup and quality control. The extra cost translates directly into a more premium, durable fabric — most brands find the 10–15% cost increase is easily justified by the perceived quality upgrade.
Absolutely. We provide free A4-size fabric swatches (up to 3 options) shipped via DHL/FedEx at no charge. We recommend comparing interlock against jersey and piqué side-by-side to feel the structural difference — the zero-curl and double-faced qualities are best appreciated by touch.
