What Is Recycled Sportswear Fabric?
Recycled sportswear fabric is polyester or nylon that has been manufactured from post-consumer waste instead of virgin petroleum. The most common source is post-consumer PET bottles (the clear plastic water and beverage bottles you recycle) which are cleaned, shredded into flakes, melted at 270°C, extruded into polyester chips, and then spun into yarn identical to virgin polyester. The result — called rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) — is chemically and physically indistinguishable from virgin polyester in every measurable way that matters for sportswear.

Moisture Wicking

Quick Drying
Same hydrophobic surface, same evaporation rate. A 180 GSM rPET jersey dries in the same time as an equivalent virgin PET jersey — approximately 30–45 minutes in ambient conditions.
Full Sublimation
The molecular structure that accepts sublimation dye is identical in recycled and virgin polyester. Same color vibrancy, same wash fastness, same edge definition at 200°C.
Tensile Strength
Single-iteration recycled polyester retains 95–100% of virgin polyester's tensile strength. The 0–5% variance is measurable only in lab tests — not in any real-world garment application.

Weight Consistency

Hand feel is determined by filament denier, yarn construction, and knit structure — not by feedstock source. Side-by-side blind tests show buyers cannot reliably identify which is recycled.
Wash Durability
Same 200–300+ wash lifecycle as virgin polyester. The recycling process does not affect the fiber's resistance to laundering, abrasion, or chemical degradation from detergents.

Sublimation
The #1 decoration method for recycled polyester — and the reason it's the most commercially viable sustainable sportswear fabric. Sublimation works identically on rPET and virgin PET because the molecular structure is the same. Full-coverage designs, unlimited colors, photographic detail, zero additional dyeing step. This is the killer combination: sustainability story + sublimation flexibility that organic cotton, Tencel, and wool simply cannot match.
Screen Printing
Works identically to virgin polyester — same ink adhesion, same cure temperature, same wash fastness. Plastisol and water-based inks both perform well. The advantage over sublimation for recycled fabric is when you want a specific Pantone color on a pre-dyed fabric (e.g., a white logo on a navy recycled polyester tee). Best for simple logos, sponsor names, and chest/back graphics.
Embroidery & Heat Transfer
Embroidery works well on recycled polyester — same needle penetration, same thread tension, same backing requirements as virgin poly. Best for polo shirts, corporate sportswear, and premium-positioned garments where the stitched look conveys quality. Heat transfer vinyl and digital transfers also work identically. For the most sophisticated recycled garment branding, combine a sublimated base with embroidered crest — premium sustainability story at every level.
