Soft Touch Sportswear Fabrics
The fabric that makes consumers touch the garment before they read the label. Sueded and peached polyester with a peach-skin softness that bridges the gap between performance and luxury — while keeping polyester's moisture-wicking, shape retention, and sublimation capability.
What Is Soft Touch Fabric?
Soft touch fabric is standard polyester knit that has been through a mechanical finishing process called sueding (or peaching). After the fabric is knitted, it passes over a rotating cylinder wrapped in abrasive paper or emery cloth, which gently breaks and raises the micro-fibers on the surface. These raised fibers create a fine, uniform fuzz — a velvety nap that feels remarkably similar to natural suede or peach skin against the hand.
We produce soft touch fabric in two intensity levels: Light Suede (light brushing, 5–8% sublimation muting, maximum detail sharpness) and Heavy Peach (heavy brushing, 15–20% muting, maximum softness). Both use high-quality micro-denier polyester yarn (0.8–1.2 denier) because finer yarns produce a softer, more uniform nap than standard denier yarn. All soft touch fabric receives our standard anti-pilling treatment and bio-polish finish after sueding to ensure the softness is maintained through 30+ wash cycles.
The sueding process is permanent — it physically alters the fiber surface structure, not a chemical coating. The softness cannot wash out. However, the raised fibers are more exposed than unbrushed polyester, which means they are slightly more susceptible to pilling and abrasion. We manage this with our anti-pilling treatment, which removes the loosest surface fibers while preserving the nap structure. The result is a fabric that stays soft for the garment's lifetime, not just the first three washes like chemical softeners on cheap garments.
Available Soft Touch Types
Same base polyester, different brushing intensities — each targets a different balance of softness, print quality, and durability.
Weight Spectrum & Garment Type
Soft touch fabric is most effective in the lightweight-to-midweight range where the soft drape and feel are most noticeable and the premium positioning justifies the cost premium over standard polyester.

Color Options for Soft Touch
Soft touch fabric is almost always sublimated, giving unlimited color options — but the nap slightly affects how colors appear.
Why Soft Touch Wins in Athleisure
The hand feel isn't just cosmetic — it drives purchase decisions, justifies premium pricing, and creates brand loyalty in the lifestyle sportswear space.
Peach-Skin Softness
The sueded nap feels remarkably similar to natural peach skin or fine suede — smooth, velvety, and warm to the touch. This is the #1 reason consumers choose soft touch over standard polyester for lifestyle sportswear.
15–25% Price Premium
Consumers consistently pay more for a soft-touch garment even when performance specs are identical to standard polyester. Soft touch is a visible, tangible premium that doesn't require education to appreciate.
Retains Wicking
Unlike chemical softeners that coat the fiber and block moisture wicking, sueding is a mechanical process that leaves the polyester's moisture-management properties completely intact. No trade-off between feel and function.
Athleisure Drape
The lightweight soft touch fabric drapes beautifully on the body, creating the fluid, relaxed silhouette that defines modern athleisure. It hangs naturally rather than holding a rigid shape.
Sublimation Ready
Despite the raised nap, soft touch is fully sublimation-ready (with 10–15% color muting). All-over designs, team graphics, and sponsor logos work with permanent, wash-fast results.
Permanent Finish
Unlike chemical softeners that wash out after 5–15 washes, sueding is a mechanical change to the fiber surface. The softness is permanent for the garment's entire lifespan.
No Shrinkage
Polyester's inherent dimensional stability means zero shrinkage. The soft touch finish does not alter this. Garment keeps its shape wash after wash.
Where Soft Touch Goes
Soft touch dominates in premium athleisure and lifestyle categories where the hand feel is a primary selling point.
Soft Touch vs. Standard Polyester vs. Cotton
Understanding why you'd choose soft touch over standard polyester or cotton — and when cotton still makes sense.

Honest Assessment
- Unmatched premium hand feel — the peach-skin nap makes the fabric feel like a $40–50 garment even at $8–12 cost price point, creating a luxury perception that drives purchase decisions
- 15–25% higher retail price point — the soft touch hand feel is visible, tangible, and doesn't require consumer education to appreciate, making it one of the easiest premium features to market
- Retains 100% of polyester's moisture-wicking, shape retention, and quick-dry properties — the softness is purely cosmetic, not functional
- Permanent finish — the sueding is mechanical, not chemical, so the softness survives 30+ washes without degrading, unlike chemical softeners
- Athleisure drape — the lightweight sueded fabric creates the fluid, relaxed silhouette that defines modern athleisure styling; standard polyester at the same GSM feels comparatively stiff
- Sublimation compatible — all-over designs, logos, and sponsor graphics work with permanent, wash-fast results (with 10–15% color muting)
- Natural matte finish — the nap creates a matte, non-glossy surface that reads as more organic and premium than standard polyester's synthetic shine
- 20–30% higher cost — the sueding process adds $0.50–$1.00 per meter, which adds up on high-volume orders compared to standard unbrushed polyester
- Reduced sublimation vibrancy — the raised nap scatters dye slightly, reducing color saturation by 10–15% compared to smooth polyester (not an issue for most designs, but matters for neon or high-contrast graphics)
- Lower abrasion resistance — the sueded fibers are more exposed to friction and wear than smooth polyester; 10–15% lower Martindale rating at the same GSM
- Higher pilling risk — exposed fiber ends are more likely to tangle into pills, though our anti-pilling treatment brings it to an acceptable Grade 3–4 rating
- Snagging risk — the nap can catch on velcro, zippers, and rough surfaces more easily than smooth polyester
- Over-engineered for basic use — using soft touch for a $5 promotional giveaway tee is overspending; save it for premium athleisure where the softness is the selling point
Branding Soft Touch Garments
The soft nap requires specific adjustments to standard decoration methods — here's what works and what doesn't.
Sublimation
The dominant decoration method for soft touch polyester. The fabric accepts sublimation dye well with 10–15% color muting from the raised fibers. This muting actually works in soft touch's favor for athleisure — the slightly muted colors look more natural and less "plastic" than the hyper-glossy finish of standard polyester sublimation. Use light suede for designs where color accuracy is critical; heavy peach for designs where softness is the priority. Pre-heat the calendar to 200°C and press at 210–220°C for 25–30 seconds for optimal dye transfer.
Screen Printing
Works on soft touch but requires lower temperature curing (140–150°C vs. 180°C standard) to prevent the heat from damaging the raised nap. Use water-based or modified plastisol inks. The soft surface grips ink well, producing crisp, durable prints for chest logos, sleeve crests, and small sponsor placements. Avoid large solid print areas — they stiffen the fabric and destroy the soft hand feel. For the best combination of premium feel and decoration, use sublimation for the all-over design and screen printing only for small, high-impact logo placements.
Embroidery
The premium branding method for soft touch garments. The soft, napped surface provides a luxurious backdrop that makes embroidery look high-end. Use lightweight cutaway backing to prevent the embroidery from stiffening the fabric. Keep designs small (under 8x8cm) and avoid dense stitch patterns that weigh down the fabric and destroy the drape. Embroidery on soft touch is particularly effective for small chest logos, sleeve crests, and collar badges on premium hoodies and joggers where the tactile stitch detail complements the soft hand feel.
Specify Your Soft Touch Fabric
Every variable affects the balance between softness, durability, print quality, and cost.
Brush Intensity
Light suede (5–8% sublimation muting, maximum print clarity) or heavy peach (15–20% muting, maximum softness). Choose based on whether sublimation accuracy or hand feel is the priority.
GSM Target
130–160 GSM for lightweight studio wear, 160–190 GSM for standard athleisure tees and hoodies, 190–220 GSM for structured joggers and outer layers where the softness is a secondary attribute.
