What Is Organic Cotton Fabric?

Organic cotton fabric is cotton that has been grown from non-GMO seeds without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, then processed through a certified supply chain that prohibits chlorine bleaching, toxic dyes, and formaldehyde-based finishes. Every stage — from field to finished fabric — is audited under GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), the most comprehensive organic textile certification in the world.

"Organic cotton is the most credible sustainability claim a brand can make in textiles. Not because the fabric feels dramatically different — it doesn't — but because GOTS certification covers the entire supply chain from farm to finished product. When a brand says 'organic cotton' with GOTS backing, that claim is verifiable, traceable, and recognized by every major retailer on Earth. No other fabric certification comes close to this level of rigor."

Our organic cotton range covers organic combed cotton (the premium baseline), organic single jersey (t-shirts, casual wear), organic interlock (polos, heavier tees), organic fleece (hoodies, sweatshirts), and organic-cotton blends (60/40 and 50/50 with polyester for enhanced durability). Every construction is produced under our Sialkot manufacturing facility with full GOTS chain-of-custody documentation.

Every batch is tested for residual pesticide levels (zero detectable per GOTS requirements), heavy metal content (below OEKO-TEX limits), colorfastness (Grade 4+), pilling resistance (Grade 3–4, ISO 12945-2), shrinkage control (pre-shrunk to under 3%), and pH compatibility (skin-safe 5.5–7.0). Full test reports are provided with every order.

Our Certification Stack

Organic cotton is only as credible as the certifications behind it. Here's what backs every meter we produce.

GOTS

Global Organic Textile Standard

The gold standard — covers organic fiber content, processing chemicals, environmental wastewater, social criteria, and full supply chain traceability from farm to finished fabric.

OEKO-TEX 100

Standard 100 — Class I & II

Tests every component for harmful substances. Class I (baby products) is the most stringent level — our organic cotton meets this standard, meaning it's safe for all ages and skin types.

ISO 9001:2015

Quality Management System

Ensures consistent manufacturing processes, documented quality control procedures, and continuous improvement across our entire organic cotton production line.

OCS

Organic Content Standard

Verifies the exact percentage of organic content in blended fabrics — essential for our organic-cotton-polyester blends where organic content is tracked and certified precisely.

Scores shown are for GOTS-certified organic combed cotton at 180 GSM. Conventional cotton scores: Eco Score 35, Softness 72, Durability 75, Breathability 75, Color Vibrancy 85 (slight advantage from fewer dye restrictions), Cost Efficiency 90. Organic cotton's higher softness score comes from longer fiber staples preserved by hand-picking. Color vibrancy is slightly lower because GOTS prohibits certain high-impact dyestuffs. All scores based on standardized lab testing at equivalent GSM.

Why Brands Choose Organic Cotton

Beyond sustainability — the practical performance properties that make organic cotton a smart fabric choice.

Naturally Soft

Hand-picked organic cotton preserves longer fiber staples, creating smoother yarn and a naturally soft hand — without chemical softeners.

Highly Breathable

Natural fiber structure allows constant air circulation — stays comfortable in warm conditions, ideal for casual and light-activity wear.

Hypoallergenic

No chemical residues from pesticides or processing — safe for sensitive skin, babies, and anyone with contact dermatitis triggers.

Thermo-Comfortable

Cotton's natural insulation properties keep you comfortable across seasons — cool in summer, warm as a base layer in cooler months.

Premium Drape

Organic combed cotton has excellent drape and body — garments hang beautifully and feel substantial without being heavy.

Fully Biodegradable

100% organic cotton decomposes in 1–5 months in soil — compared to 200+ years for polyester. Complete end-of-life sustainability.

Traceable Story

GOTS chain-of-custody means you can tell customers exactly where the cotton was grown, ginned, spun, and knitted — a powerful brand narrative.

Pro tip: Most successful organic cotton brands use a layered approach — organic jersey for their entry-level eco line (accessible price point, "organic cotton" on the label), organic combed for their premium line (softer hand, "organic combed cotton" justifies higher price), and organic interlock for their corporate and teamwear line where structure matters. All three can be dyed from coordinated GOTS-approved color lots for a unified brand palette. See our conventional cotton range for non-organic options at lower price points.

Honest Assessment

Advantages
  • GOTS-certified supply chain — the most credible organic claim in textiles, recognized globally

  • Zero synthetic pesticides — no chemical residues in fabric, safer for skin and farmers
  • Non-GMO seeds — preserves agricultural biodiversity, supports traditional farming communities
  • Often softer than conventional — hand-picking preserves longer fiber staples for smoother yarn
  • Fully biodegradable — complete end-of-life sustainability, no microplastic pollution
  • Hypoallergenic — ideal for baby clothing, sensitive skin, and medical-adjacent products
  • Premium positioning — "organic cotton" commands 2–3× retail markup over conventional
  • Traceable story — GOTS documentation enables farm-to-garment brand narratives that build customer loyalty
Disadvantages
  • 20–40% more expensive per meter than conventional cotton
  • No moisture wicking — absorbs sweat and holds it against skin, not ideal for intense sportswear
  • Cannot be sublimated — polyester content needed for dye-sub printing
  • Slightly limited color palette — GOTS dye restrictions exclude some bright neons and deep blacks
  • Wrinkles easily — not ideal for garments that must maintain a crisp appearance
  • 2–3% shrinkage even when pre-shrunk — more than polyester's less than 1%
  • Lower abrasion resistance than polyester — shorter garment lifespan under heavy friction
  • Longer lead times possible — organic cotton supply can have availability gaps during peak seasons
Our mitigation: For the wicking limitation, we offer organic-cotton-polyester blends (60/40) that provide cotton's natural feel with polyester's moisture management — the organic content is still certified under OCS. For sublimation needs, these same blends accept full dye-sub on the polyester fibers. For color limitations, our GOTS-approved dye house achieves 95%+ of standard color requests — the exceptions are extreme neons and some deep blacks. We maintain 60-day rolling stock of our top 20 organic cotton colors to eliminate lead-time concerns. For shrinkage, all organic cotton is pre-shrunk at source to under 3%, with care labels specifically written for organic cotton to minimize returns. Frequently Asked Questions

Detailed answers to the questions your customers will ask. For more, visit our main FAQ page.

Organic cotton is grown from non-GMO seeds without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. The soil is built up through natural crop rotation, composting, and biological pest management. After harvesting, the ginning, spinning, knitting, and finishing processes must also meet strict standards — no chlorine bleaching, no toxic dyes, no formaldehyde-based finishes. The entire supply chain from farm to finished fabric is audited and certified by bodies like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OCS (Organic Content Standard). "Organic" isn't just about how the cotton is grown — it's a complete supply chain standard covering environmental, social, and traceability requirements from seed to shelf.
Objectively yes — on environmental metrics. Organic cotton uses 91% less water (primarily because it's rain-fed rather than irrigated), produces 46% less CO₂e, eliminates synthetic pesticide runoff that damages waterways and soil microbiomes, and uses non-GMO seeds that preserve agricultural biodiversity. On fabric performance, organic and conventional cotton are very similar — the difference is in the farming and processing, not the fiber itself. However, organic cotton is typically higher quality because it's often hand-picked (preserving fiber length) rather than machine-stripped (which breaks fibers). Longer fibers = smoother, stronger yarn = softer fabric. The main downside is cost: 20–40% more per meter. Read our detailed comparison in polyester vs. cotton for sportswear.
In blind touch tests, most people cannot distinguish organic from conventional cotton of the same construction and GSM. However, there are subtle differences: (1) Organic cotton is often hand-picked rather than machine-stripped, which preserves longer fiber staples — creating slightly softer yarn. (2) It doesn't go through chemical softening treatments (prohibited under GOTS), so what you feel is the pure, untreated fiber — some perceive this as "cleaner." (3) After 10–15 washes, organic cotton often feels softer than conventional because it hasn't been coated in chemical finishes that wear off unevenly. The differences are real but subtle. See our combed cotton page for more on fiber processing.
Organic cotton works for LOW-INTENSITY sportswear — yoga, walking, Pilates, light gym work, and lifestyle activewear. It's breathable, soft, and comfortable. However, pure organic cotton does NOT wick moisture effectively — it absorbs sweat and holds it against your body. For genuine moisture management, we recommend organic-cotton-polyester blends (60/40 or 50/50) that provide cotton's natural feel on the inner face while the polyester handles moisture transport. We can also apply a GOTS-compliant wicking finish to organic cotton blends. For high-intensity sportswear, our moisture-wicking polyester remains the correct choice. Learn more about best fabrics for gym wear.
The gold standard is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) — it covers both agricultural origin (minimum 70% organic fiber) AND processing (no toxic dyes, no formaldehyde, fair labor, environmental wastewater treatment). GOTS is recognized by every major retailer. OCS (Organic Content Standard) only verifies the organic content percentage — it doesn't cover processing or social standards. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is about chemical safety but doesn't verify organic growing. For a credible organic cotton product, you need GOTS. We hold GOTS certification and provide full documentation. Read our deep dive on textile certifications.
Yes — 20–40% more per meter than equivalent conventional cotton. The premium comes from: (1) Lower yields — organic farming produces 20–30% less cotton per acre. (2) Certification costs — GOTS auditing adds administrative overhead. (3) Supply chain segregation — organic cotton must be kept separate from conventional at every stage. (4) Hand-picking — many organic operations use hand-picking to preserve fiber quality. However, the retail premium is typically 2–3× the fabric premium. A t-shirt that costs $1.50 more in organic fabric can command $8–15 more at retail. For brands positioning in the sustainable segment, organic cotton's ROI is among the highest. See our cost breakdown guide for full pricing analysis.
Organic cotton dyes beautifully — but with GOTS restrictions. Only approved dyestuffs can be used (no heavy metals, no azo dyes that release restricted amines, no chlorine bleaching). The color palette is slightly more limited — very bright neons and some deep blacks can be harder to achieve. However, the vast majority of standard colors work excellently. Sublimation does NOT work on pure organic cotton — it requires polyester. For sublimation needs, we offer organic-cotton-polyester blends (minimum 70% organic cotton) that achieve partial sublimation on the polyester fibers. Alternatively, GOTS-approved screen printing with water-based inks works perfectly on pure organic cotton.
Yes — durability is equivalent to or slightly better than conventional cotton at the same GSM. Organic cotton often performs better on pilling tests because longer fiber staples from hand-picking create stronger yarn with fewer loose ends. We test every batch for tensile strength, pilling resistance (Grade 3–4 minimum), colorfastness (Grade 4+), and shrinkage control (pre-shrunk to under 3%). The durability concern is real for very lightweight organic cotton (under 130 GSM) in high-friction applications, but that's true for any cotton at that weight. Our quality control process ensures every batch meets commercial standards.
Machine wash warm (40°C max recommended), tumble dry low or line dry, iron on medium heat. Key differences: avoid bleach (even "color-safe" bleach can degrade GOTS-compliant dyes faster) and avoid fabric softeners if you want to maintain natural breathability. One advantage is that organic cotton hasn't been coated in chemical finishes, so it's actually more forgiving than conventional cotton that's been heavily processed. Our pre-shrunk organic cotton maintains dimensions through 40+ wash cycles. We provide care labels specifically written for organic cotton — read our garment care guide for best practices.
Yes — two paths. Path 1: "Made with organic cotton" claim — we supply GOTS-certified fabric and you can make this claim on your labeling without your own GOTS certification. Simplest path, ideal for brands starting out. Path 2: GOTS logo on labels — your brand needs its own GOTS certification or must be listed as a sub-contractor under our GOTS scope. Takes 4–8 weeks through a GOTS-approved body (Control Union, Ecocert, or OneCert). Cost typically $1,500–3,000 for initial certification plus annual audit fees. For most brands starting their sportswear brand, Path 1 is recommended. We provide full guidance on both paths. Visit our private label page for branding details.
