Ponte Roma Fabric
The tailored knit that looks like a woven — ponte's double-knit structure delivers the clean lines, opacity, and stability of a woven fabric with the comfort and stretch of a knit. The fabric that made athleisure pants acceptable in offices, and casualwear feel like luxury. No ironing, no bagging, no curling — just a polished silhouette wash after wash.
What Is Ponte Fabric?
Ponte Roma fabric is a double-knit textile where both the face and back are knitted simultaneously, creating two smooth, stable surfaces. Unlike single-knit jersey — which has a distinct right and wrong side and curls at the edges — ponte is balanced, meaning it lies perfectly flat, doesn't curl, and looks nearly identical on both faces. The classic ponte blend is approximately 68% polyester, 28% rayon, and 4% spandex, a precise combination engineered for dimensional stability, soft hand feel, and controlled stretch recovery.
Our ponte range covers classic ponte roma (the standard 68/28/4 blend), sport ponte (polyester/spandex for sublimation-ready sport ponte), cotton ponte (cotton/spandex for natural-fiber brands), heavyweight ponte (280–320 GSM for structured trousers and winter wear), recycled ponte (GRS-certified recycled poly/spandex), and textured ponte (slub and jacquard variations). Each serves distinct market segments within a ponte-forward product line.
Every roll is tested for stretch recovery (≥95% after 10 cycles, ASTM D3107), dimensional stability (<3% after 5 washes, ISO 6330), pilling resistance (Grade 3–4, ISO 12945-2), opacity (zero show-through at standard stretch, ISO 105-X12), colorfastness to washing (Grade 4+, ISO 105-C06), and edge curl (zero curl measured per AATCC 179).
All Ponte Fabrics We Offer
From classic tailoring to sublimation-ready sport ponte — each blend targets a specific market and performance requirement.
Ponte vs. Jersey vs. French Terry
How ponte's double-knit structure compares against the two most common single-knit alternatives across properties that define structured garments.
Why Ponte Commands Premium Positioning
Engineering properties that make ponte the only knit fabric acceptable in tailored, structured, and professional garment categories.
Double-Knit Stability
Knitted on both faces simultaneously — creates a balanced, stable fabric that holds its shape like a woven without the stiffness, bagging, or edge curling of single knits.
100% Opaque
Dense double-knit structure eliminates all show-through at any reasonable stretch level — ponte pants, skirts, and dresses require no linings, reducing construction cost.
Zero Edge Curling
Unlike single knits that curl at every cut edge, ponte lies perfectly flat — dramatically simplifies cutting, hemming, and banding while reducing production waste.
Stretch + Recovery
4-way stretch with 95%+ recovery — provides comfort and movement without bagging at knees, seat, or elbows over time.
Wash-and-Wear
Polyester content provides natural wrinkle resistance — ponte garments look polished straight from the dryer, requires minimal to no ironing.
Tailoring Friendly
Stable enough for darts, structured seams, and welt pockets — behaves like a woven under the sewing machine for precise construction.
Premium Hand Feel
The rayon component adds a softness that pure polyester double knits cannot replicate — feels noticeably more premium than standard poly double knits.
What It's Used For
Ponte dominates the intersection of comfort and professionalism — wherever a garment must look tailored but feel like activewear.
Ponte Types — Head to Head
Choosing the right ponte blend determines hand feel, sublimation capability, care requirements, and target market.

Honest Assessment
- Perfect structure — double-knit stability means garments hold their exact silhouette without bagging, stretching, or losing shape over time
- 100% opaque — eliminates the need for linings, reducing construction cost and garment weight
- Zero edge curling — lies flat for easy cutting, hemming, and banding with minimal production waste
- Wash-and-wear convenience — looks polished straight from the dryer, requires minimal to no ironing
- Smooth double face — no wrong side, fewer production errors, reversible garment options
- Tailoring compatible — stable enough for darts, welt pockets, and structured seams like a woven
- Figure-flattering drape — smooths the body and creates clean, professional lines
- The athleisure revolution fabric — ponte pants are the #1 product that made knit pants acceptable in professional settings
- Rayon adds a softness that pure polyester double knits cannot replicate — a tangible premium differentiator
- Heavier than single knits — double-knit uses more yarn per square meter
- Can be warm — dense structure traps heat, not ideal for hot-climate summer wear without lightweight construction
- Classic ponte (with rayon) cannot be sublimated — limits all-over print options for the most popular blend
- Rayon component reduces moisture-wicking — not ideal for high-intensity gym wear
- Can pill if quality is poor — cheap ponte with low-quality rayon shows pilling after 10–15 washes
- Not suitable for high-intensity sportswear — lacks the moisture management for running, HIIT, or football
- Rayon shrinks more than polyester — requires precise pre-shrinking to meet <3% guarantee
- Less breathable than cotton — the tight structure limits airflow in hot conditions
- Not biodegradable — petroleum-based synthetic taking 200+ years to decompose
- Slightly more expensive than equivalent polyester single knits — premium positioning costs more
- Cotton ponte may need ironing — less wrinkle-resistant than poly/rayon blends
Best Methods for Ponte Fabric
Ponte's stable surface makes it excellent for most decoration methods — with one critical limitation for classic ponte.
Embroidery
The #1 decoration method for ponte — the stable, non-stretching surface provides exceptional stitch grip without puckering, distortion, or show-through. Ponte's density holds even dense logo fills beautifully, making it ideal for embroidered waistband branding, chest crests, and monograms on ponte blazers. No backing needed due to full opacity.
Sublimation (Sport Ponte)
Exclusive to sport ponte (88/12 polyester/spandex) — the 88% polyester content enables full dye-sublimation with permanent, fade-proof prints. The double-knit structure creates a slightly richer, more substantial visual result than single-jersey sublimation. This is the go-to method for all-over print ponte leggings and custom print yoga pants.
Screen Printing
Works well on ponte for bold, simple designs — large block logos, geometric patterns, and placement prints. The stable surface accepts plastisol and water-based inks consistently without the shifting that plagues single-jersey printing. Not suitable for fine detail or small text below 9pt. Best for large chest/back prints on ponte garments.
